    The Jamaica School of Nurse Anaesthesia (JSNA) is an academic institution in the Ministry of Health, which prepares registered nurses for a contemporary world of work, services to the community and personal and professional growth.

    The faculty of JSNA believes that each patient has the basic right to quality health care including anaesthesia care. The nurse anaesthetist as a member of the anaesthesia care team can provide this service. We further believe the nurse anaesthetist should respect the individual’s right to dignity as expressed in support of freedom of choice, privacy and the right to life for all patients. We also believe that education continues the process of self-development and should be a satisfying and joyous venture.

As of May 2007 the Jamaica School Of Nurse Anaesthesia had been in operation for 25 years, 88 Nurse Anaesthetists have graduated from the school. 57 of our graduates are from Jamaica and the remainding 31 from other Caribbean islands, click here to see break down.

  • Traits of competitive applicant:
    TRAITS OF COMPETITIVE APPLICANTS
    • Five or more years as a Registered Nurse with experience in ICU, A&E department
    • Certification as Certified Midwife
    • Critical Care Nurse certification (optional)
    • The ability to assume change position duties

    JSNA is accredited by the UWI, UTech, Nursing Council of Jamaica and the Jamaica Association of Nurse Anaesthetists (JANA). The Ministry of Health has mandated all its training institutions to move into Colleges or Universities, in keeping with the trends in nursing education worldwide. Consequently, JSNA, MOH and UTech are discussing the terms of reference under which JSNA will be relocated to UTech as a Masters programme.

    Facilities conducive to learning are available for the school at K.P.H. In addition, there are classroom space provided at the University of the West Indies, University of Technology and the Bustamante Hospital for Children (BHC), for classes taught by professors and physicians associated at these institutions.

    The institution is situated on the Kingston Public/Victoria Jubilee Hospital complex, and utilizes the clinical and other facilities. Students also attend the campuses of the University of the West Indies (UHWI) and the University of Technology (UTech) for basic sciences, physiology and pathophysiology lectures.

    Class Size:
    Class size of eight (8) students means hands-on learning, collaboration and engaging discussions in every discipline.

    Entering Class Profile:
    Students must have three (3) to five (5) years nursing experience and a midwifery certificate.

    Technology:
    Students have access to laptop computer, multimedia etc.

    The institution is located on the grounds of the Kingston Public Hospital, North Street, Kingston, Jamaica West Indies. The 500 beds hospital has a long history as a training institution for health professionals. It is the primary trauma facility and the foremost maternity hospital in the country. Kidney transplant was first performed at KPH in 1970. Over the years patients have come from all over the world for treatment.

Summary:
The Nurse Anaesthesia Programme is based on a nursing and pre-medical background of sciences and involves an in-depth application of these sciences to the art of anaesthesia. Graduates of this programme are qualified to work in the CARICOM Region in every area of anaesthesia, as practitioners, administrators and educators.

The programme was preceded by nurses going to Philadelphia, Cuba and then the SS Hope, to pursue training. In 1981 the JSNA was opened, offering a Certificate after 26 months, this was upgraded to a Diploma after the programme’s curriculum was reviewed and extended to 32 months. The school is located on the Kingston Public/Victoria Jubilee Hospitals Complex, but is expected to go into the University of Technology in the near future, offering a Masters degree.
